History
The history of Periyar can be traced back to the year 1895 when the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed that led to the formation of Lake Periyar.
The Lake Periyar Reserve came into existence in 1899 and 1934 was the year when the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary was formed. The two wildlife reserves were consolidated into the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950. Periyar became a tiger reserve in the year 1978.
In 1991 Periyar became a part of Project Elephant and the India Eco development Project was launched in this region in the year 1996.
