History
A cluster of seven islands (Mazagaon, Colaba, Wadala, Mahim, Parel, Old Woman's Island and Matunga-Sion) - Mumbai was a part of the ancient Ashokan Empire. For a while Muslim kings from Gujarat established their supremacy in the region till the Portuguese arrived.
After more than a hundred years of Portuguese hegemony, Mumbai was passed on to King Charles II of England as dowry. In the later years the British East India Company established their dominance in these parts.
Post-Indian independence, Mumbai became the capital of Maharashtra.
