History
Chennai was nothing but an insignificant fishing settlement in the olden Days. Known as Tondaimandalam, Chennai got the name Madrasapatnam.
The region was picked by agents of British East India Company for setting up a trading post. Once the Raja of Chandragiri gave Madrasapatnam to the British, the place began to flourish gradually.
Fort St. George was constructed in Madrasapatnam in the year 1644. Chennai mushroomed out of this trade post as neighboring villages blended their boundaries with this trade town.
