Tours to Chennai

The 'Gateway to South India' - Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, South India. A glittering gem on the Coromandel Coast, Chennai proliferated into an urban center from a cluster of villages around George Town.

A pulsating center of modern art, Chennai is an amazing blend of ethnicity and contemporary lifestyles. Regardless of all the development, you'll be amazed to find doorsteps in Chennai households decorated with the traditional 'kollam'. The 'lungi- shirt' culture is common and yet Chennai is fast becoming an IT hub.

Chennai is the fourth largest metropolis in India. See the attractions of this centuries old city that boasts of being a center of classical art forms and South Indian folk traditions.

History

Chennai was nothing but an insignificant fishing settlement in the olden Days. Known as Tondaimandalam, Chennai got the name Madrasapatnam.

The region was picked by agents of British East India Company for setting up a trading post. Once the Raja of Chandragiri gave Madrasapatnam to the British, the place began to flourish gradually.

Fort St. George was constructed in Madrasapatnam in the year 1644. Chennai mushroomed out of this trade post as neighboring villages blended their boundaries with this trade town.

The French had a small tryst with the political control of Chennai. Once India gained independence, Chennai became the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
