History
Known as 'Alexandria of the East' in the olden Days, Kanyakumari was an important center of art, culture and education. Kanyakumari was of course an important ancient trade post.
St. Thomas came to preach Christianity in these parts in A.D. 52 and Islam also made in roads in these parts in the ancient Days. Kanyakumari was rulers by kings of several dynasties at different points of time in history. The Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas and Nayaks have had a great influence on the political history of this region.
Kanyakumari gets its name from a very popular legend that is associated with these parts. It is believed that a local princess Kanya who was supposedly an incarnation of Goddess Parvati did penance to get married to Lord Siva and since the lord did not turn up for the wedding, the goddess decided to remain a virgin for the rest of her life and thus originated the name - Kanyakumari. There is a Kumari Amman Temple on the shores of Kanyakumari to commemorate the legend.
