History
The history of Gwalior is enshrouded in legend. It is widely believed that Suraj Sen a leper was cured with a drink offered to him by a hermit who lived near the Suraj Kund. The sage blessed the chieftain with a new name and prophesized that till his descendants retained this surname they would rule over a bastion that would develop in this very region.
The Suraj Kund water pool still lies within the fort walls of the mighty Gwalior Fort. For several centuries rulers of the Tomar dynasty ruled Gwalior that was later conquered by Ibrahim Lodhi. The Mughals and Marathas ruled from Gwalior at different points of time. Later the fort came under Scindia rule till the Britishers took over.
Post independence, Gwalior became a part of Madhya Pradesh - an Indian state.
