History
The history of Chittorgarh is a history of heroic sacrifice, valor, love and passion. The seemingly invincible ramparts of the Chittorgarh Fort were attacked in 1303 by Alauddin Khilji who defeated the brave Rajputs. The Pathan invader wanted to make the beautiful Rani Padmini a part of his harem but the Rajput queen chose to commit suicide along with the other ladies of the royal household. This was the first mass scale Johar that happened in the history of Chittorgarh.
Chittorgarh was attacked again in the year 1535 by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and again the women of the royal household led by the queen committed Johar. The unfortunate incident repeated itself 33 years later when the fort was attacked in the year 1568.
